I tried to stay awake and wait for my chance to escape, but instead I slept and did not even dream.

It was, from the slant of the light, afternoon when I reluctantly opened my eyes again. Mary was shaking my shoulder roughly, saying in an urgent voice, “Wake up, Sailor. Wake up.”

She turned her head, looked away from me. I followed the line of her gaze.

At the foot of the bed stood a portly gentleman in mutton-chop whiskers and a smoking jacket. In his right hand he held a Smith and Wesson revolver, not pointing it directly at me, but in my general direction.

Mary’s voice shook only slightly—she was, after all, a modern girl—as she said with stiff formality, “Mr. Sailor, I’d like you to meet my father, Sir James Arthur, late of Her Majesty’s Northumberland Fusiliers.”
